The Meaning of “Mother’s Daughter” by Miley Cyrus

Well, for anyone who has watched the music video for this, there is no doubt that it is absolutely strange.

The video is all over the place. It goes from women’s rights, to LGBTQ, to being comfortable in your own skin, to even women being a “riot”.

A lot of this has to do with president Donald Trump being elected. Miley was not happy, and threatened to leave the United States.

She ended up not leaving, because she didn’t think it was fair to leave everyone else behind, and leaving would not help her make a difference.

Before I get too much into Miley’s views, why don’t we take a look at the lyrics of the song, and its meaning.

Hallelujah, I’m a freak
I’m a freak, hallelujah
Every day of the week I’ma do ya
Like I want to
I’m a Nile Crocodile, a Piranha

Miley is praising God that she is a freak, and is stating that she is going to “do” you however she wants to. She is dangerous and strong like a “Nile Crocodile” and aggressive like a piranha, be careful or she will rip you to shreds.

Oh my God, she got the power
Oh, look at her, she got the power

She has the “power” to get things done, she doesn’t need anyone else.

So-so, so don’t fuck with my freedom
I came back to get me some
I’m nasty, I’m evil
Must be something in the water or that I’m my mother’s daughter
Don’t fuck with my freedom
I came back to get me some
I’m nasty, I’m evil
Must be something in the water or that I’m my mother’s daughter

This is pretty self explanatory, don’t mess with her freedom she’s coming back into the spotlight to say what she needs to say, and do what she needs to do to get more. She refers to herself as “nasty” and “evil” just as Donald Trump supposedly referred to Hilary Clinton being. When she says ” Must be something in the water or that I’m my mother’s daughter” she is saying that many women are protesting and trying to protect their freedom and she is too, or that she is doing it because she is just like her mom and doing everything that she can to make a difference because her mother believed that she would.

So, back up, back up, back up, back up, boy, ooh
Back up, back up, back up, back up, boy, ooh

She is telling the “boy” to back up because she is a woman and it’s her time to have the power, and she what she can do.

Hallelujah, I’m a witch
I’m a witch, hallelujah
Swish swish, I’m a three-point shooter
I blow through ya
Like a hot wind out in the bayou, ya

Now she is praising God that she is a witch, which is supposedly associated with women who are feminists. Referring to herself as 3 pt shooter, basically means she is making plays. She’s going to blow through ya like a hot wind out in the bayou, that’s self explanatory.

My mama always told me that I’d make it
That I’d make it, so I made it
I put my back into and my heart in it
So I did it, yeah, I did it
My mamma always told me that I’d make it
That I’d make it, so I made it
I put my back into and my heart in it
So I did it, yeah, I did it

Her mom always told her she was going to make it big and make a difference, and she did. She gave it her all to get to where she is now, and she has herself and her mother to thank.
