The Wisconsin Raw Milk Bill which passed the Senate by a vote of 25-8 and the Assembly by a vote of 60-35 faced a roadblock when Governor Jim Doyle vetoed the bill citing health concerns. Reports indicate that Governor Jim Doyle who was leaning towards signing this bill was heavily lobbied by big corporations and public health officials to Veto it even against the peoples will.  The bill is not yet dead though, the Assembly and Senate nearly have enough votes to over ride the veto.

Health concerns over the safety of raw milk have been a controversial topic of discussion for awhile now. Raw Milk is known to have a vast array of beneficial health effects and pasteurization is known to turn raw milk into a void and null substance with little or no nutritional value because the process kills enzymes and nutrients in the milk.

Further disturbing is the fact that rarely has anyone ever actually gotten sick from drinking raw milk, those that have gotten sick, were already in a weakened condition and vulnerable to bacteria anyways due to pre-existing ailments or a vitamin / mineral deficient diet leading them to have a less than optimally functioning immune system.

The safety concerns, even though based on fear and speculation, are at best comical as they are non existant. In a state where it is legal to smoke cigarettes which have no known health benefits and have been repeatedly proven to cause addictions, cancers, and various other ailments; are legal, even if pregnant. Why aren’t people who want to drink Raw Milk given the same benefit? What is wrong with selling Raw Milk with a warning label on it like cigarettes are able to be sold?

So you see, the problem isn’t that anyone actually believes selling raw milk is actually harmful to anyone’s health. The problem is, there is a lot of money to be milked (haha) from the Dairy Farmers in Wisconsin through the form of milk testing and pasteurization among many other things, the state and big corporations simply make too much money to allow Raw Milk to be sold.

The states and corporations already know the demand for raw milk is so high that if they made it legal to sell it, they would lose a lot of revenue from the commercialization of milk.

Vetoing the Raw Milk bill is unethical and Governor Doyle should be impeached. It punishes the small local farmers of Wisconsin by subjecting them to expensive testing they can’t afford but also violates the freedoms of Americans and residents of Wisconsin to purchase any product they wish. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with putting a label on a gallon of raw milk that says it’s known to contain harmful bacteria and could cause illness and selling it. Look at cigarettes and many other harmful products that are sold in Wisconsin.

Although, e-coli and other harmful bacteria only get into milk normally through poor farming sanitation which is mainly seen in big commercial farms and not in the local farms that would be selling this stuff anyways, but that’s a whole other topic to get into.
